DON'T STRESS...

KNOW HOW TO DRESS!

When it's time to gather everyone together for family photos every mom know's that it can be quite a chore. Schedules are crazy and the kids have so so many activities, how will you every fit it all in and get everyone ready to go?  Here are some helpful hints to consider as you plan for your family portraits.

Keep color choices simple:  Colors should be within the same color range.   Solids work best.  Discourage family members from wearing different patterns and too wide a selection of colors.

Follow these simple rules to avoid anything that might distract the viewer.   I suggest everyone wear a color or colors with in the same color palette.   Keep (darks, overly bright colors and pastels from being mixed).   Always go with a solid versus a pattern.  If you choose a pattern make sure it is liimited to no more than very simple, classic or very subtle one.

Think about how your location will effect what you choose to wear:   Where are you headed?  Will you be at the park, lake, in the woods, or possibily in your home?   If you keep your backgrounds in mind it makes it easier to pick what to wear.  If you are at the beach, go barefoot, heading to the woods coordinate with jeans and boots.   Fields are perfect places to show off sundresses, jeans and maybe a pair of cowboy boots.

Remember Comfy Kids are Happy Kids:   Often times preparing for family portraits can be stressful.   Children have to be dressed ready to go and somehow stay clean long enough to be caputured in the portrait with a happy smiling face.   Depending on the age of your children, that can be like hearding cats, getting it all done.  It's definately not an easy task.    Think about the kids.   Will your children be more comfy in something relaxed for that hour vs. something very fancy that they can't sit and relax in?  I truly believe when dealing with kids the easier the clothing the better.   Be realistic based on ages can you expect them to pay attention (and look good!) without melting down?  NOPE!!!

Avoid the MINI me trap: When planning your session, you may think it's a great idea for everyone to dress in the exact same outfit,   I disagree.   Similar colors are fine but let your family members show a little personal style.   That's what makes your family so interesting.  It's fun to look back in later years and be able to see what everyone liked at certain times in their lives.

Today's trends can be tomorrow's regrets:  Be careful not to pick outfits that are too trendy.  Even if your children love certain characters or your teenager needs to have the hottest fashion.   I recommend you go with something more classic that will withstand the test of time.

When it's all said and done, the most important thing to remember is how important your family is to you and why you wanted to capture this moment in time.   So remember, RELAX, LAUGH have FUN!   Let your kids be kids  and do what kids do.   When personalities come through, that's when you know you have done it right.
